ENGLISH SUMMARY OF CA-4 BORDER AGREEMENT

Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador have each the signed the Central American Border Control Agreement (CA-4). Under this agreement travelers may travel between signatory countries without completing exit and entry formalities for periods up to 90 days. Visitors who wish to extend their visa may apply for an extension; however, visitors who stay more than 90 days without permission may be fined and expelled from any of the four countries. Visitors expelled from one country may be refused entry to others.

There are also some important documents travelers need to carry while traveling to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras since Immigration Control Officers may prompt for them in order to complete legal immigration formalities before granting access to the country. • International Credit Card, letter from your Bank or Travel Checks (in your name)
  • Confirmation of employment (explaining your position and your annual salary)
  • Round-trip ticket to Guatemala, El Salvador or Honduras
  • Invitation letter or other documents which may support the reasons of your stay in that country (in case you are visiting on business or to carry out technical works in the country)
  • Indicate why you are visiting the country (if you are staying at a local friend’s house, it is important to have the contact details of the person who is offering lodging since they may call at the time of interviewing you to verify)
  • How long you intend to stay in that country
  • How you will support yourself during your time in Guatemala, El Salvador or Honduras
  • Where you intend to travel following your visit to any of the CA-4 countries
  • If you have a permit to enter the country you intend to travel to after your stay in any of the CA-4 countries
